Abstract

The idea that planned cropping of surviving wild ungulates in tropical Africa may be the most efficient way of using many vast marginal areas where cultivation and ranching are unwise or impossible, has on1.y become generally accepted during the last few years. Those countries in which land of this type occurs, and which still have their indigenous large mammals, are beginning to count themselves fortunate that they have preserved this hitherto much-maligned natural resource. But what they are now facing is the dearth of practical knowledge and experience in realising this potential, apart from its tourist attraction.
