Small mammals were studied in a South African montane region at elevations ranging from 1500 to 3000 m. The distribution and habitat preferences of eight rodent and two insectivore species are dealt with. The relative abundance of small mammals in 18 habitats (recognized on the basis of vegetation type, altitude, and burning treatment) is detailed and discussed. Small mammal numbers, species richness, and diversity in the different habitats are compared and related to habitat complexity.
