The frog genus Tomopterna (Anura : Ranidae) comprises eight described species distributed in Africa. Parsimony analyses of mitochondrial 12S and 16S rRNA gene sequence data were performed and a molecular phylogeny inferred. The phylogenetic relationships of the recently described T. damarensis are discussed. A North African population previously reported as T. cryptotis was found to be genetically closest to T. delalandii. Its species status remained unresolved. Phylogenetic relationships proposed are (T. natalensis (T. tuberculosa (T. sp. Ayoun el-Atrouss (T. delalandii ((T. cryptotis, T. tandyi)(T. sp. Beira, T. sp. Shankara))((T. marmorata, T. krugerensis) T. damarensis))))).
