Abstract

West Africa is the home of six species of lower primates all of which belong to the suborder Lorisoidea. Of these six species two are pottos (Family Lorisidae) and four are bushbabies (Family Galagidae). Little is known of the ecology and distribution of any of the lorisoid primates. The only available field study on the group is that of Sauer & Sauer (1963) on the Senegal bushbaby in southern Africa. In compiling information on the Central African species Hill (1953) had to rely on taxonomic studies (Schwarz 1931 a and b) and on scanty information from expedition reports (Sanderson 1940).
