celebrates 50 years and has seen a number of name changes, yet through it all, the journal's objective remained steadfast. The journal was established by the Zoological Society of Southern Africa in 1965 as , and the first volume included 25 papers from the proceedings of the society's second symposium on 'African Mammals', held in Salisbury (now Harare) in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). The journal fulfilled the mandate of the society to promote and publish zoological research conducted in southern Africa in two issues per year. In 1979 the South African Bureau of Scientific Publications took over the responsibility of publishing the journal and with that came a change in name to .
