Abstract

A considerable body of observations on the behaviour and ecology of southern African tadpoles has accumulated, largely because a knowledge of the behaviour of the animals is essential for efficient collecting. As with the adults there is a discernible association between the microhabitats and aspects of the behaviour such as locomotory modes, feeding and predator avoidance (van Dijk 1971 b). The morphology of the tadpoles, like that of the adults, is well correlated with the behaviour, particularly the locomotory modes.
