The agricultural economics discipline and profession are facing challenging times to ensure its relevance and respect. As a profession, it is globally in the process of accelerated transformation. The next generation of agricultural economists will arguably be practicing the profession in a considerably different manner in a much changed environment. The transformation process is prompted by several inherent observed changes and developments in the profession and the modern economy. Such changes and developments are advanced and then examined in the first part of this paper. Thereafter, proposals are offered towards the restoration and amelioration of agricultural economics.
