AgriPROBE september 2005 10 meet our experts After graduating from the University of Natal in 1991 I joined the Sugarcane Experiment Station as a researcher in the farm planning section, and was given the responsibility of developing the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for the sugar industry. In the early days of GIS the emphasis was mainly on data capture as there were very few digital datasets available. One of the challenges in those days was to actually produce a printed map.
