Abstract

While primary agriculture is the core focus of the Department of Agriculture, it has established a new Programme (Chief Directorate) called Rural Development Coordination in 2010. In the past, rural development largely entailed creating economic opportunities through the agricultural and forestry industries whereas today there is acknowledgement of the broad range of development areas that contribute to rural development. Social upliftment, education, entrepreneurship, physical infrastructure and many others play a vital role in building vibrant, equitable and sustainable rural communities.
