Abstract

The rain-fed, winter cereal production regions of the Western Cape are characterized by cool, moist winters and dry hot summers. Two main production regions can be identified viz. the Swartland (on the west Coast) and the coastal hinterland of the southern Cape. The Swartland has a typically Mediterranean climate with more than 80% of annual precipitation occurring in the winter months (April to September). Rainfall during the summer in the Swartland region tends to be ineffective with no significant rain-fed crops or pastures being able to persist during the hot dry summers.
