Now take off the yellow hat and put on the black one. We are now thinking only judgement. Now is the time to judge and tear apart the 'straw dog' prepared by Prof. Sue Milton"", says Dr. Johann Booysen as he masterfully facilitated a one day workshop in a somewhat unusual way. Edward De Bono's six thinking hat decision making technique (see AgriProbe, June 2007) was used as a facilitation tool. Even though the hats were purely imaginative, it forced the group of twenty participants to think in different ways during this workshop, funded by the Table Mountain Funds. The aim of the workshop was to develop a method to assess the condition of renosterveld patches on private and public lands. The conservation status of Renosterveld, particularly in the higher rainfall part of its distribution, is very poor and over 95% of the lowland Renosterveld has been transformed for development of field crops, vineyards and orchards.
