Abstract

The Survey shows that the South African population stands at 48,5 million, an increase of 8,2% since 2001. However this increase is somewhat slower than the previous population increase of 10,4% from 1996 to 2001. The Western Cape and Gauteng provinces showed the greatest increases in population size between 2001 and 2007 with 16,7% and 13,9% respectively. The Eastern Cape, Free State and North West experienced an increase in population of less than 5%.
