Abstract

Through the LRAD and CASP processes of the government, extensive small stock farms have been purchased, infrastructurally developed and stocked with breeding ewes, in the Central Karoo District. Beneficiaries now need to be supported to develop these farms into sustainable, productive contributors to South African agriculture. The Department of Agriculture (FSD, Pasture research and Animal Health) together with the B. Tech. programme, Agricultural management, Saasveld (NMMU); undertook a baseline survey on animal health, production, management and economy of 15 farms in the district during August 2008. In August 2009 these farms have been revisited and evaluated on progress based on the 2008 baseline. Two new farms were also added to the investigation. This survey will be used to direct the extension support programme of the Central Karoo.
