Abstract

Unless alternatives such as aquaculture are developed, global factors (such as illegal and unsustainable fishing practices and the environmental impact of climate change) may bring about the end of commercial fishing by 2048, according to a critical report by Worm 2006. Unemployment and poverty in areas that rely on fisheries for their livelihood is already on the rise, while food security is threatened by collapsing fish stocks.
