Abstract

The effect of climate change on agriculture in the Western Cape will be one of the major determinants of the sustainability of the natural resource base, the agricultural sector, and the competitiveness of its farmers. Provincial Strategic Objective 7 (Mainstreaming sustainability and optimising resource-use efficiency) will in this regard be of utmost importance, with special emphasis on water management, land use and renewable energy. The judicial utilisation of our natural resources will be a critical driver in the success of our sector, from commercial to smallholder farmer. The role of the Department, however, is twofold. Firstly, we should practise and advocate climate-smart agriculture - meaning that all advice given to clients should be based on climate-smart principles, and secondly, our own departmental operations (from farming to in-house resource utilisation) should be climate- and resource-smart.
