It is important to be able to evaluate the loss to agriculture that would occur as a result of the take-over of agricultural land by projected non-agricultural developments such as the establishment of new towns. Using as sample area a part of the Eastern Transvaal Highveld, an illustration is given of a method for making this evaluation at regional scales. It entails mapping land types (land with markedly uniform climate, terrain form and soil pattern), defining the constituent climate-soil-slope units in each land type, and coupling crop yield data to each climate-soil-slope unit. The agricultural potential of each land type can then be expressed on the basis of one crop (e.g. t maize/ha for the land type) or several crops (e.g. highly productive for maize, sunflower seed, grain sorghum and potatoes). Land types with similar production potential can be grouped together to provide a general indication of the agricultural production potential of a very large region.
