Abstract

Detrimental effects of excess applications of boron fertilizer to Spanish groundnuts (cv. Natal Common) were recorded in a field trial conducted over three seasons. The highest rate of B applied decreased pod yields by 10% in the first two seasons and by 29% in the third season. Symptoms of B toxicity were observed only in the third season after the application of a total of 24,5 kg B/ha over the previous six seasons. A marginal leaflet chlorosis was visible 90 days after planting. This moderate symptom of B toxicity soon progressed to a situation where a marginal necrosis appeared. Entire, fully-expanded leaves (i.e. leaflets+rachis) were sampled from plants growing in plots where these symptoms were evident.
