White sands saturated with water, a lower silt and clay content in white sands compared with associated red sands, a white-yellow profile and the proximity of white sands to areas of obvious water accumulation such as the Kuruman river valley, suggest hydromorphy as the cause of the colour of the white and yellow sands amidst the otherwise red sands of the Kalahari.
