abstract= "The soil water content in a maize field was measured by means of a gamma-attenuation meter as well as a neutron-scattering meter over a period of eight weeks. Comparison of the results with values obtained by means of the sampling, weighing and drying method shows that the water content of the topsoil layer can be obtained with slightly better accuracy and with far less calibration by using the gamma meter than by using the neutron meter."
