An investigation into methods for the determination of the cation exchange capacity of soils and factors contributing to the cation exchange capacity. The aim of this investigation was to obtain a suitable and relatively quick method for the determination of the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soils. The contribution of the organic matter fraction to the CEC of these soils was also determined. The simple and relatively quick Bascomb method for the determination of the CEC of soils was found to compare favourably with the standard ""weighing method'"" with its relatively few inherent errors. The CEC was found to be independent of the cation used (viz Mg++ or K+) in unbuffered systems. The Bascomb method employing Mg ions can therefore be recommended for these soils. The organic fraction was found to contribute up to 60 per cent of the CEC of some of these soils in spite of the fact that they contained only from 0.39 to 1.88 per cent carbon.
