Abstract

Two toxic principles and a compound, chemically related to these toxins but non-poisonous to guinea-pigs when dosed at the same level as the toxins have been isolated from Lasiosiphon burchellii Meisn. Ground leaves of the plant were exhaustively extracted with benzene and the benzene extract chromatographed on formamide-impregnated cellulose. The poisonous fraction thus obtained was further purified by chromatography on alumina and silica gel and the compounds finally separated by means of preparative thin layer chromatography. The properties and reactions executed on these compounds are descriptionbed.
