Determination of the chlorine content of leaf tobacco by means of a quick test method The test paper method for determining the chlorine content of tobacco proposed by Chouteau {1967) was modified, resulting in elimination of the initial dry ashing step in the procedure. It was found that extraction of a 2 g sample with 30 ml of 0,12 ? nitric acid solution gave the best results. The end of a test strip was brought and kept in contact with the surface of the suspension until the wet front reached a certain height. By comparing the height of colour change of test strips of unknown samples with that obtained from known standards, the chlorine content of the unknown samples could be determined. This method seems reliable for classifying tobacco according to its chlorine content in groups of lower than 1%, 1 to 2/0, 2 to 3% and in excess of 3%.
