Soil samples, representing a wide range of textural and chemical properties, were analysed for exchange capacity, exchangeable and soluble cations, pH and clay content. The exchangeable cations were investigated as dependent variables of various combinations of other soil properties, using a computerized multiple regression procedure. Exchange relationships of extremely high efficiency (R = 0,72-0,99) were obtained in all cases; these included remarkably good simplified relationships between adsorbed values for cations in general and exchange capacity, pH and soluble cations, especially sodium. It is felt that this approach could lead to advances in our knowledge of cationic equilibria under natural soil conditions.
