Abstract

Gilgai of the wavy or linear type occur extensively on dark clay soils in the Rustenburg area. It has been shown that morphological, chemical and vegetational differences exist between crest and trough situations in the micro-relief. Formation of the gilgai is ascribed to the swell and shrink properties of montmorillonite, the predominant mineral in the clay fraction of these soils.
