Abstract

*Part of a dissertation submitted by the senior author in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the M.Sc. Agric. degree at the University of Stellenbosch, 1969. A method, based on analysis of variance was applied to establish the replication necessary to determine various deviations about the soil population mean as significant. Three morphologically similar soil series were selected for this purpose. Data presented indicate that the greater the variability the greater the number of pits required to be sampled. The applicability of the method to soil survey work is also discussed.
