oa Agrochemophysica - An index to relate local topography to mean minimum temperatures

A study was undertaken to find a quantitative relationship between mean monthly minimum temperatures measured at 41 weather stations, and their local topography. For this purpose an index was established by means of which local topography could be conveniently expressed. The index values were obtained by multiplying a quantity related to the local surface gradient by a factor which is proportionate to the extent to which the surrounding area is lower than the weather station. A highly significant statistical relationship was found between the monthly means of minimum temperatures under relatively stable conditions and this index. Under unstable conditions, however, local topography was found to have no significant influence on minimum temperatures. Using the deviation of the daily temperature range from the long term mean range, days could be classified according to the stability of the lower layers of the atmosphere.
