*Part of thesis submitted by the author for the degree Ph.D. Agric. at the University of Stellenbosch. Different apple rootstocks differed markedly in their tolerance to low levels of A1 in nutrient culture and this effect was evident at both high and low temperatures. Minimum levels of A1 in solution which were toxic to apple seedlings appear to be at an activity of less than 5x 10-6 mol/dm3 in saturated soil extracts. Activity ratios in saturated soil extracts appear to be a good indication of availability of soil Ca. Possibility of a Ca-Al-Zn interaction in the nutrition of apple seedlings in an acid soil was indicated.
