A study was undertaken to determine whether a narrow relationship between soil P and certain plant parameters could be registered using the calcium lactate and ammonium fluoride methods o f extraction, and how this relationship could be influenced by the grouping o f soils in different pH and day groups. The experimental material consisted o f representative top soil and maize plant samples from a pot experiment. The plant parameters were plant mass, percentage and total P content, plant mass reaction and total P uptake reaction. It was found that when soil pH and day content were not taken into consideration, good correlation values could be obtained, but the variation within the different plant parameters could not be satisfactorily accounted for by the corresponding variation in soil P according to the two extraction methods. With grouping into pH and day groups, exceptional relationships could be obtained which show that both methods can be used with confidence for the determination o f the P status o f the soils used in the experiment.
