An intensive ecological study o f the soils and vegetation o f the Sterkspruit soil form was undertaken to evaluate the soil criteria to be used for agricultural planning o f natural pastures. The vegetation and habitat data were collected in stands situated on soils o f the Sterkspruit form. The soil and other environmental properties of the stands were ordinated by means of principal components analysis, to establish the variation within the Sterkspruit form. In this manner the soils of this form were classified into habitat classes. The vegetation was divided into ecological groups and subgroups by using the same ordination technique. The vegetation and habitat ordinations were subsequently compared with each other, in order to determine the important ecological factors influencing the floristic composition and distribution o f the vegetation of the Sterkspruit form. The topography, texture o f the A-horizon, calcium and magnesium contents of the A-horizon, phosphate contents o f the A and B-horizons, effective depth and degree of erosion are the most important N factors which have an effect on the vegetation on the soils of the Sterkspruit form in this area. The mutual interaction between the physical factors is responsible for specific moisture regimes which, together with the chemical properties mentioned, influence the floristic composition and distribution of the vegetation.
