oa Agrochemophysica - Relationships between aluminium toxicity and sunflower yields on an Avalon medium sandy loam*

Marked responses of sunflowers to liming an acid Avalon medium sandy loam were recorded in both pot and field experiments. Since the poor growth of sunflowers on the unameliorated soil had been shown to be due largely to aluminium toxicity, relationships between measures of Al toxicity and yield were investigated. In the pot experiment, it was shown that liming had a marked benefit on seedling top and root growth, but liming above this level was of no further benefit, yields being slightly reduced. Results of the field experiment supported these findings.
