Abstract

Nelson Mandela was already a living legend, a world icon and even better, "the icon of all the icons". In human history, no man has been so much venerated or received such an apotheosis. When he passed away on 5 December 2013, the world lost one of the most charismatic leaders in our times and definitely the most popular figure in African history because of his exceptional contribution to freedom, peace and reconciliation in South Africa, the rest of Africa and the world. Nelson Mandela was a citizen of the world. He preached and practiced forgiveness, love, and reconciliation instead of revenge, hate and reconciliation. He taught Africa and the world a new way of doing politics that resulted in the "re-enchantment of politics". This article revisits Madiba's background and reflects on an exceptional leadership that made him so "unique".
