Abstract

Until recently, biologists had largely ignored snakes as subjects for research. Things are now starting to change; Shine and Bonnet (2000) have documented a dramatic increase in the use of snakes for ecological research, to the extent that snakes are fast becoming the new Guinea pigs for ecologists. Secor and Diamond (1998) have also convincingly shown that pythons, in particular, are the prefect model subjects for some types of physiological research.
