The relationship of the lizard fauna of Iran to that of southern Africa is tenuous at best. Although both land areas share an ancient Gondwanan derivation, the modern Iranian fauna is decidedly Palaearctic in character. Indeed, the only genera Iran shares with sub- Saharan Africa are the broadly distributed Hemidactylus, Mabuya, and Varanus.
