Abstract

On 15 October 2002 Garth Leon Underwood died. Although he published little directly on African herpetology (Underwood & Kochva 1993; Wollberg et al. 1998), Garth's studies on the classification of snakes and geckos underpin much of our current understanding of these groups. I don't want to go into the details of Garth's life and his seminal contributions to herpetology; Colin McCarthy (2003), his student and colleague at the Natural History Museum (NMH), London, has presented a detailed obituary, and an excellent and timely historical perspective is given.
