Abstract

Johan Marais's books are well known for the exquisite quality of their colour photographs, as well as attractive layout and user-friendly text. is no exception. This book deals with common snake species, including those most likely to be encountered by members of the public. It is not a field guide and the stated aim of the book is to "identify group characters before identifying individual species". The book starts with a short introduction covering such topics as snake habitats, how to find snakes, how to identify snakes, various aspects of their biology, venomous species and the treatment of snakebite. After this the various species are categorized into 28 groups according to family, or similarities in appearance or behaviour. The book concludes with a short glossary and index of common names.
