Abstract

This splendid addition to the literature on the southern African reptile fauna comes in a 24 x 17 x 2.5cm format. The text is printed on glossy paper throughout, and excellent colour photos are lavishly inserted on every page to facilitate identification of species. This book differs from Bill Branch's field guides in splitting up the 517 species of reptiles into groups of similar species, rather than providing a short text on each individual species, the underlying philosophy being 'Could a lay person be expected to differentiate between two species without the aid of specialized equipment?' If not, the two species have been placed in the same group, regardless of their taxonomic relationship. Twelve species, which are rare or have only limited ranges in the far north of southern Africa, have been omitted.
