Abstract

As the year 2000 drew to a close, some 36.1 million men, women and children faced a future dominated by a fatal disease unknown just a few decades ago. The year saw 3 million deaths from HIV / AIDS - a higher global total than in any year since the beginning of the epidemic. However, with the HIV-positive population still expanding - there were 5.3 million new infections in 2000 alone-the annual number of AIDS deaths can be expected to increase for many years before peaking (AIDS epidemic update, 2000).
