Abstract

In 1997 a midwife obstetric unit was opened in a large academic hospital. The staff were recruited from those who had been redeployed. Thus this unit was unlike other midwife obstetric units where the units are geographically distanced from the nearest referral hospital and are usually staffed by midwives who have an advanced diploma in midwifery. Prior to commencing in the unit, the staff were given a skills updating course.
