Abstract

Nursing claims caring as the hallmark of the nursing profession. As such, all issues relating to caring are important to the profession and professionals. The content of this paper reports on factors that erode a caring concern and is a spin-off from an extensive existential phenomenological study into the maintenance of a caring concern, by the student nurse as caregiver. The erosive factors that emerged from the data are: special problems experienced by the student nurse and neophyte; aspects relating to self; emotional involvement; physical exhaustion; theory, practice and teaching; administrative issues; work conditions and patient characteristics.
