Physical activities are essential for humans to grow, develop, and maintain health. Industrialization, modern technologies, and automation have taken away the need or opportunity for physical exertion, leading to physical inactivity, one of the leading risk factors of chronic diseases worldwide. Scientific evidence has linked regular physical activity and positive lifestyle habits to better health, longevity, quality of life, and total well-being. Since its inception in the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention in 1979, the concept of health promotion has evolved to include the educational, organizational, procedural, environmental, social, and financial supports that help reduce negative health behaviors and promote positive change among various population groups in a variety of settings. Based this concept, sport can play a major role in health promotion by providing the necessary supports for behavioral changes. While competitive sports inspire and motivate people, organized non-competitive sports are effective means to help people become physically active and develop healthier lifestyle habits. This helps reduce the rate of obesity, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, three of the ten global disease burden risk factors, which will decrease the burden of unnecessary illness and premature death worldwide.
