In many African countries western sports and games were introduced by colonialists in their efforts to perpetuate their cultures and traditions in the colonies which they ruled. This is true of both Anglophone and Francophone African nations. Similar colonial legacies also abound in Portuguese-speaking African countries. Before colonial incursion Africans had their own indigenous forms of leisure activities and past times, which were often regarded by colonial masters as primitive and backward.
