Abstract

This paper attempts to discuss the essential movements of Ewe music and dance. In doing so, the author recognizes the fact that in Ewe societies just like other African communities, the music and dance are closely intertwined. Their performance usually integrates the visual arts, such as costume, make-up and stage properties. Hence, their in depth analysis requires a theoretical approach that highlights the interconnectedness of the various components. The writer, however, maintains that this analysis is a tentative approach geared toward a more integrated approach to African music and dance description / analysis. Nevertheless, this essay would shed lights on some of the essential movements of Ewe music and dance. Operating within a cross-cultural setting, I utilize both Ewe and Western concepts of movement description / analysis in this theorizing process.
