Abstract

Recent national and international statistics have shown that the incidence of obesity and overweight is on the increase in many developed and developing countries, especially among children and youth. Research has also consistently shown that the antecedents of obesity are detectable in childhood leading to such debilitating ailments as hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, metabolic syndrome and other hypokinetic diseases. In order to combat the menace of obesity several methods have been adopted across populations, including exercise, diet intervention and drug therapy. It is interesting to analyse the effectiveness of these modalities in terms of the one that is most effective in the prevention and management of obesity and overweight conditions.
