Abstract

The 17 articles in this special edition of AJPHERD are the results of a national research project whereby 23 higher education institutions took part in a research project headed by Professor Cora Burnett of the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, to determine the 'delivery for the sport industry by South African institutions'. The research followed a participatory action paradigm and representatives of all the different sports-related entities of the universities took part in focus groups, interviews and completed questionnaires. Under the auspices of USSA, the national study attempted to address the gap in the current body of knowledge where athlete -students are the primary research participations. All members of the different academic departments, who took part in the national research, were invited to contribute manuscripts in this regard. Five universities took the opportunity to contribute relevant publications, namely the University of Johannesburg, North-West University, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Central University of Technology, Free State and University of the Free State.
