Abstract

Mega sporting events, such as the Soccer World Cup™, the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games attract the interest of millions of fans and generate widespread interest in different parts of the world. These events are critical because they have long term political, social and physical consequences for hosting nations. To ensure the success of these events, one major component involves the recruitment of competent volunteers who are ready to deliver relevant services. In spite of hosting mega sporting events, studies identifying factors which motivate South Africans to volunteerism are limited. The present study reports students' biographical variables and their effect on motivational factors which influenced them into volunteering for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The effect of biographical variables on volunteering motivational factors was evaluated through a number of hypotheses. Four hundred and twenty six participants with a majority of 269 (63.3%) males participated in the study. Their ages ranged between 18 years and 25 years (M = 20.57; SD = 1.84). The results indicated that for all the hypotheses tested, there was no significant multivariate main effect for the location of the university, gender, age, and the degree registered for, on students' volunteerism motivation. It is thus concluded that students are an important target group that organisers of mega sporting events should focus on. This is critical because more often than not volunteers tend to repeat their volunteering. Furthermore volunteerism has its inherent benefits that may be crucial to students' future. The paper also highlights some limitations of the study.
