Abstract

Considerable research in organisational behaviour has been extended to the subject of job satisfaction, life satisfaction as well as quality of work life. However, limited research attention has been paid to the relationship between these three factors within the municipal sports environment. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between job satisfaction, life satisfaction and quality of work life among municipal sports officers in South Africa. A quantitative approach was used in which a structured questionnaire was administered to 185 municipal sports officers based in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. Cronbach alpha coefficients were used to measure the reliability of the measuring instrument. Data analysis was conducted through non-parametric correlations and regression analysis. Five job satisfaction factors, namely working conditions, ability utilisation, teamwork, creativity and autonomy were identified through Principal Components Analysis (PCA). A positive relationship was found between working conditions and life satisfaction. Positive relationships were found between quality of work life and three factors, namely working conditions, teamwork and autonomy. Ability utilisation and creativity were found to be negatively correlated with both life satisfaction and quality of work life. By examining the structural interplay between job satisfaction, life satisfaction and quality of work life among municipal sports officers, municipalities could devise strategies to meet the needs of their municipal sports officers, thereby facilitating improved sports-related service delivery within municipal constituencies.
