Abstract

The induction of the Leisure and Recreation Association of South Africa (LARASA) in May 2010 was a turning point for the Recreation, Leisure and Tourism fields in South Africa. Formed to represent the needs of the professionals in the industry, its main objectives are to promote skills development, encourage research and advocate for improved service delivery to improve the quality of life of all citizens. LARASA also serves as a catalyst to advocate and create the awareness of an active lifestyle by encouraging participation in physical activity to build a healthy nation through innovative and sustainable recreation and leisure service delivery. As a primary intervention, the implementation of leisure time services, strengthened by a coherent policy framework and strategic plan within the public service, will contribute to addressing the health and social challenges we are confronted with in South Africa, by transforming lives, spaces and cities into healthy, vibrant and sustainable destinations.
