This supplement of AJPHERD adopted the theme of Public Health Research as a cornerstone of health services reform. The ten sub-themes that contributed to the main theme are divided into two books of Supplement 1:1 and Supplement 1: 2. Supplement 1:1 carries the following sub themes: HIV and AIDS, management of health care services, competence of health care workers, understanding the National Health Insurance Scheme and child nutrition and feeding practices. Supplement 1: 2 carries the following sub-themes: sexual behaviour, gender-based violence, substance abuse, dental public health and palliative and chronic care. The need for health services reform is an ongoing phenomenon, and stems from the acknowledgement that, not only will South Africa not be able to meet its Millennium Developmental Goals (MDGs) in 2015, but also that the country has actually regressed in some aspects. Research is an effective tool for assessment and evaluation of health services and therefore can provide suggestions and direction on what needs to be done to achieve stated goals of the South African health system. The series of articles focus on some of the identified research areas.
