Abstract

The World Health Organisation (WHO) classified the lack of participation in physical activity and sport as a major contributor to the poor health of individuals globally. The lack of participation in physical activity and sport not only affects the health of children at a young age but such sedentary behaviour is also likely to continue into adulthood. Such a lifestyle has debilitating effects such as hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and respiratory ailments. It has negative implications for the health of individuals, families, society, the health system and ultimately the economy of our country. This behaviour, according to the WHO, has serious health cost implications for individuals as well as negative economic consequences for society.
