Abstract

The research was conducted to explore factors that influence the health experiences of men in polygynous relationships.A descriptive and interpretive phenomenological research methodology was used to gather data through personal in-depth interviews. This led to an understanding of the phenomena within the naturalistic context of occurrence - the natural social and cultural context. The findings of this study revealed that the health of participants in polygynous relationships is influenced by religion and culture. The participants believe that the church guides them as far as their health at home is concerned, and that traditional healers have answers to their health concerns. There is a general myth that a polygynous relationship is riddled with ill-health. There is a strong need to promote culture and religion among this group of the population so as to meet their health needs. The need to maintain their cultural practices was palpable throughout the narrations of their health-seeking behaviours.
